How To Treat Gum Recession

Leaving gum recession untreated can lead to loss of bone structure, supporting tissue, and even teeth. Dr. Trujillo has many strategies to treat and prevent gum recession.

What is Gum Recession?

When the gum tissue starts to pull back or wear away, revealing more of the tooth or its roots. It is referred to as gum recession. Receding gums cause pockets and gaps to occur between the gum line and the teeth. This allows for bacteria that can cause disease to accumulate. By leaving gum recession untreated, the patient suffers a severe loss of bone structure and supporting tissue. This loss of bone and tissue eventually leads to tooth loss. Gum recession can be caused by the following factors:

  • Hormonal changes that result in the gums becoming more sensitive and vulnerable.
  • Tobacco products that result in sticky plaque.
  • Teeth clinching or grinding that puts too much force on the teeth.
  • Poor dental care that allows for plaque and tartar to build up.
  • Aggressive brushing of the teeth that wears away enamel.
  • Genes that make patients more predisposed to gum disease.
  • Periodontal diseases that destroy gum tissue.

What Are My Periodontal Treatment Options?

The traditional but more invasive method to treat gum recession is through a gum graft. This involves taking some soft tissue from the patient’s palate and inserting it where the gum tissue has receded. This has been a proven method to restore a healthy gum line, but this procedure requires cutting and stitching. It can be a painful process for our patients and it can take several weeks to heal.

Regenerative Pocket-Depth Reduction Treatment

Regeneration and pocket-depth reduction are two other treatment options. The regeneration method involves the use of a regenerative material to help regrow lost bone and tissue. This method is recommended for patients who have severe bone loss from gum recession.

The pocket depth reduction method is aimed at removing the harmful bacteria in the patient’s gum and then reducing the size of the pockets in the gum to prevent harmful bacteria from building up.

Pinhole Surgical Technique

A less invasive, more modern, and specialized treatment option for gum recession is the pinhole surgical technique. This is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from moderate to advanced gum recession. Through the use of the pinhole surgical technique, patients no longer need a gum graft. It also lessens the recovery time due to eliminating the cutting and stitching typically with the treatment of gum recession. To summarize, the pinhole surgical technique has the following benefits:

  • No stitches.
  • Faster healing time.
  • Results that are long-lasting and leave a natural-looking gum line.
  • Graft tissue is unnecessary.
  • Less discomfort after the procedure.
  • No scalpels.

Pocket depth reduction, regeneration, soft tissue graft, and the Pinhole Surgical Technique are the three standard treatment options for gum recessions.

How Can I Prevent Gum Recession?

The easiest way to prevent gum recession is to practice good oral care. This includes flossing and brushing your teeth daily. It is recommended that patients visit our office twice a year. We may recommend more visits depending on the patient’s oral health. From there, it is recommended that all patients use a soft-bristled toothbrush and speak to our dental professionals about the proper way to brush their teeth. Additionally, the following factors can help prevent gum recession:

  • Eliminate the use of tobacco products.
  • Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet.
  • Monitor any changes that occur with your mouth, such as teeth grinding or clenching.
